Kati Basti and Janu Basti
Basti is a traditional, Ayurvedic remedy that is widely available in India. It is used for slipped discs, fractures, spondylosis (inflammation), sciatica, degenerative disc disease, intervertebral disc protrusion, arthritis and joint pain. Kati Basti works on painful, tight, tender, stiff and tired back, spine, lumbosacral and sacro-iliac (hip) joints. Janu Basti uses the same treatment on the knees.
Kati and Janu Basti are part of external oleation (Snehana) therapy in Ayurveda. The therapy creates a pool (usually 20cm circumference and 2 inches high) of warmed specially selected oil in a ring over the area. It is very safe and non-invasive, sitting on top of the skin. The base oil is Sesame Oil, to which Steve adds other oil blends dependent on your dosha (Ayurvedic bodily state), the body area and condition being treated. Mahanarayan Oil, Balaswagandhadi Oil, Bala Oil and Nirgundi Tail Oil are usual options.
Some clients find instant relief, however, the results vary person to person. A course of 4-6 treatments over 1-3 weeks may be recommended. The treatment nourishes the joints, stimulates the nerves, alleviates pain, strengthens blood supply and warms the area. You are advised to continue consulting your medical practitioner.
